The big takeaway: The one-year anniversary of the Dobbs decision that overturned federal protections for abortion rights is coming up next week, and there’s a shitload of coverage across the map, including a bunch of new research:
The Top Headlines
“The Dobbs Divide” [FiveThirtyEight] — New WeCount data shows the impact of Dobbs on clinical abortion care, but as the Online Abortion Resource Squad’s Ariella Messing noted on Twitter, we should be careful about the assumptions we make around that data: “Let's not conflate the number of abortions being counted and the number of abortions happening, please.”
“The post-Roe health care crisis” [Reveal/CIR]
Basically all of Rewire’s one-year-later Dobbs package is worth a read.
“An American Nightmare: Young, pregnant & living in Texas” [Abortion, Every Day] — Jessica Valenti interviews Terry, a 21-year-old Texas woman who was forced to travel to New Mexico to end a wanted but untenable pregnancy. This quote from Terry is so, so powerful: “I want Greg Abbott or anyone who voted for this law to look me in the eye and tell me that I deserved what happened. That I deserve to be punished by the law for what I’ve gone through. I want them to look me in the eye.”
“Medication abortion reporting overshadows disinformation, study finds” [News from the States]
“Twitter, Supposed Free Speech Haven, Is Blocking Ads for ‘Mentioning Abortion Advocacy’” [Jezebel]
“Google earned $10m from ads misdirecting abortion seekers to ‘pregnancy crisis centers’” [The Guardian] — Here’s more in the new report from the Center for Countering Digital Hate.
“The FBI is hunting a new domestic terror threat: abortion rights activists” [The Intercept] — This (bad) headline is meant to be sarcastic.
“House Republicans Vote to Ban Providing Life-Saving Abortions to Pregnant Vets” [Jezebel]
What’s happening with clinical abortion provision and medication abortion:
🇺🇸 What politicians and politicos on the national stage are doing and saying about abortion in advance of the ‘24 election:
“DeSantis says he was ‘surprised’ Trump criticized Florida’s 6-week abortion ban” [The Hill] — Truly this man could be shot out of a rocket and act surprised to find himself on fire.
“‘Why the hell are we doing this?’ McCarthy’s fractured leadership team faces new abortion tension” [Politico]
“Christie on the possibility of federal abortion ban: ‘I don’t think we should be worried about that’” [The Hill]
“How data from abortion rights fights in 2022 could shape 2024” [The 19th]
⚖️ What’s going on with abortion bans, legal challenges, and bills at the state and local levels:
🟢 “Maine State Judiciary Committee Advances Bill That Loosens Abortion Restrictions” [Truthout]
🟢 “Surgical abortions likely to remain legal [in Wyoming] until April 2024 trial” [WyoFile]
🟢 “Deadlocked Iowa Supreme Court will not reinstate 6-week abortion ban” [Iowa Public Radio]
🟡 “Oregon Senate Republicans end 6-week walkout that blocked bills on abortion, trans health care” [PBS]
🟡 “Ohio Supreme Court says Issue 1 ballot language must be rewritten” and “Advocates on each side get ready for possible vote to legalize abortion in Ohio” [Ohio Capital Journal]
🟡 “The next red state abortion fight is unfolding in Ohio” [The 19th]
🟡 “Legal arguments in challenge to new abortion ban put off until July 19” [Nebraska Examiner]
🟡 “Clinic, physicians challenge revised North Dakota abortion laws in ongoing lawsuit” [AP]
The Takes
The Mississippi Reproductive Freedom Fund’s Laurie Bertram Roberts reflects on the year post-Dobbs on the Death, Sex, Money podcast. The whole episode is worth a listen, but I want to highlight what Laurie has to say about the mutual aid, direct support, and community work the MRFF does to lift up people and families throughout their reproductive journeys, especially in light of the water crisis in Jackson: “Our free pantry is at the highest demand it's ever been at. Like, ever. Ever. And that's food and cleaning supplies and period supplies. And then we distribute diapers, you know, every week. And water, let me just also say water. We always have water out there. We keep out cases of bottled water all the time and we have been for years before it became the thing to do, because pregnant people and children under five are warned not to drink our water and have been for nine years.” (Support their work with your dollars!)
Reckon’s Becca Andrews interviews Robyn Baldridge of the Abortion Care Tennessee abortion fund. Says Baldridge, of their efforts to keep up advocacy and fundraising as the outrage cycle waxes and wanes: “Overall, it just feels like people are starting to turn away or get complacent. I think there was a time when there was this understanding that this affects everyone, even if you're not someone who needs to access abortion. But then when you're not in the reality of it, if you're really not someone that needs to access abortion, or you don't know someone that has needed to in the last year, it is really hard for it to feel present.”
New data from Guttmacher shows that up to 16 percent of folks who have abortions don’t identify as hetero women. I am no longer asking y’all to use gender-inclusive, queer-friendly language about abortion, I am demanding you do so! Don’t take my word for it, listen to trans folks who have abortions (via We Testify)!
The Tweets/Toks/Grams
“We actually don't need a new way to restrict abortion,” write Erika and Garin of @RHAVote in this thoughtful thread.

The Fight for Midnight by Dan Solomon
Ten years ago this summer, I spent a number of long, long days and nights at the Texas Capitol covering the battle to block an omnibus anti-abortion bill that made national news with Texas State Sen. Wendy Davis’ nearly 13-hour filibuster. At 15 minutes to midnight, State Sen. Leticia Van de Putte’s barn-burner of a parliamentary inquiry — “At what point must a female senator raise her hand or her voice to be recognized over the male colleagues in the room? — sent the packed capitol into a hollering froth as thousands of Texans shouted down the final vote from both inside and outside the gallery. It was an incredible experience, and I passed many of those long hours alongside now-Texas Monthly staffer Dan Solomon, who was reporting for the Austin Chronicle at the time. Dan’s debut novel, The Fight for Midnight, is a YA book that tells the story of a teen guy drawn to the filibuster and his journey to understanding the importance of abortion rights. Learn more about the book in this preview + interview with Dan in Paste.
